Are You Sabotaging Your Performance? The Omega-3 Gap Cyclists Can't Ignore

2 min readFuellingSupplements

Recent research has revealed a startling insight. Most athletes are severely deficient in Omega-3 fatty acids.

A comprehensive review involving over 1,400 elite athletes found that less than 1% had optimal Omega-3 Index (O3i) scores above 8%, with the average being just 4.43%. This low score places athletes at increased cardiovascular risk and potentially compromises performance.

Why does this matter for cyclists?
Muscle Strength & Mass: Omega-3s, particularly EPA, boost muscle protein synthesis and help prevent muscle loss during injury. Enhanced Endurance: Omega-3s improve blood flow and oxygen delivery to muscles, potentially boosting your endurance. Faster Recovery: Anti-inflammatory properties reduce muscle soreness and enhance cellular recovery. Just seven days of Omega-3 supplementation can significantly reduce post-exercise muscle soreness. Injury Prevention: Omega-3s may even offer protection against head injuries by reducing inflammation associated with trauma.

Practical Takeaways: Test Your Omega-3 Levels: Regular blood tests (Omega-3 Index) can reveal your status and guide supplementation. Dietary Sources: Aim for at least three servings of fatty fish per week (salmon, sardines, herring). Complement with plant-based sources like walnuts, chia seeds, and flaxseeds. Consider Supplementation: Most athletes fall short with diet alone. Look for supplements providing 1.5–2 grams of EPA and DHA daily, especially during intense training phases.

Cyclists aiming for peak performance can no longer ignore the Omega-3 gap, bridging it could be your next performance advantage.

On my mindThe Magic of Sudden Progress in Cycling

There's a fascinating thing about cycling, especially when you pick it up later in life: progress is never a smooth line upwards. It's more like an unpredictable rollercoaster—months of steady effort without visible gains, brief exciting breakthroughs, and then periods of plateau. And then, suddenly, a big leap forward when you least expect it.

This past week, I had a conversation with Daniel, a cyclist who's recently turned 50. He'd been working hard for years, quietly putting in the effort, managing life's stresses and juggling everything that comes with a busy job and family. Then, unexpectedly, he found himself battling for a podium spot in a gravel race. It wasn't just the excitement of competition that struck him—it was the sudden realisation that years of incremental work had paid off in a way he hadn't fully anticipated. It sparked something special, reigniting ambitions he'd started to think might be behind him.

It reminded me how powerful these moments are, especially as we get older. That feeling of being unexpectedly competitive, of being right in the thick of a fight for the win, can truly light you up and inspire you to push forward. Daniel's story reminded me—and hopefully it reminds you too—that cycling, and life, is full of these beautiful surprises if you're willing to keep slogging through the flat part of the hockey stick. Because exponential growth often arrives when you least expect it.
