AVOID Doing This Before Training!
Social media is slowing you down

This study set out to investigate the acute effects of mental fatigue induced by 30-minute smartphone use on resistance training performance in recreationally trained adults.
The intervention was 30 minutes of smartphone use (social network apps) vs. watching a documentary. Then they went on to do three sets of half back-squat to failure at 80% of 15RM, with 3-minute passive recovery between sets.
Key Findings:
- Mental Fatigue Induction: Smartphone use significantly increased perceived mental fatigue compared to the documentary condition.
- Performance Impact: Mental fatigue from smartphone use resulted in a 15% reduction in volume-load during resistance training.
- Perceived Exertion: Ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were higher after smartphone use, indicating increased effort for the same physical output.
- Physiological Measures: No significant differences in mechanical variables, motivation, intra-set performance, or blood lactate concentrations between conditions. Practical Implications:
- Avoid Smartphone Use: To maintain or improve volume-load during resistance training sessions, avoid prolonged use of smartphones before training.
- Mental Fatigue: The study suggests that mental fatigue primarily affects performance through psychological rather than physiological mechanisms.
