What this event asks of you
The RadMarathon loops out of the Tannheimer Tal through the Allgäu, the Bregenzerwald and the Lechtal, and the long route is a full Alpine day with the Oberjoch early, the Riedbergpass as the steepest section, the Hochtannbergpass as the high point, and the Gaichtpass near the finish to bring you home. The climbs are moderate in length by Alpine standards, which means the day is decided by the kilometres between them: rolling valley roads where groups form, split and reform, and where the wind can cost as much as a pass.
What this asks for is sustained endurance with repeated climbing efforts spread across a long day, rather than one summit to survive. The shorter routes keep the valley rhythm with fewer passes. Riders go wrong by treating the early climbs as a test, then arriving at the Gaichtpass with the finish in sight and no legs to climb it. Train long rides with tempo climbs spaced through them, hold a steady effort on the flat sections instead of surging with every group, and eat on the valley roads, because that is where the time to do it exists.
The day by rider level
| Route | Typical finish | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| 218 km | — | Sustained endurance across four passes and long valley roads, steady effort in groups, the Gaichtpass climbed with legs left |
| 129 km | — | A long day with the valley rhythm and the Gaichtpass descent to Weißenbach |
| 90 km | — | Rolling roads with moderate climbs and group riding |
| 56 km | — | A short loop with the valley climbs ridden steadily |
