Is the Secret Sauce to Performance?

Swearing?

1 min readMindset

Here’s a nugget you didn’t know you needed: dropping a well-timed swear word might just make you faster.

According to a recent mini-review, swearing during intense efforts can boost your physical performance by up to 8%—whether it’s grip strength, power output, or hanging on during that final sprint.

The science? Swearing seems to increase pain tolerance and disinhibition, making you push harder. Imagine yelling your favourite taboo word on that last climb (just, maybe, not in a family-friendly group ride).

Researchers even tested this with folks repeating their “choice word” during max effort tests, and the results were... colourful.

So next time you’re battling headwinds or a relentless climb, don’t just pedal—cuss (responsibly). Who knew profanity could be the ultimate aero upgrade?

On my mindThe Danger of Always Following the Crowd

Cycling plans are everywhere, and it’s tempting to grab the one that seems to promise the most gains. But here’s a truth I’ve learned: even the best-designed plan is only as good as how it fits you.

Your strengths, weaknesses, schedule, and goals should shape your approach. If something isn’t working, don’t be afraid to adjust. Training isn’t about following a plan perfectly; it’s about making the plan work for your body and your life.

What’s one small tweak you could make this week to better align your training with your needs?
