What this event asks of you
The Dragon Ride is South Wales climbing: long drags rather than Alpine passes, with the Bwlch and the Rhigos as the signature climbs and the Devil's Elbow and Black Mountain on the longer routes. None of them is steep for long, which is the trap. Riders settle in and ride them harder than they should, because every one feels manageable on its own. The longest route adds the Devil's Staircase, a short and genuinely steep climb, deep into a day that is already very long. The roads are exposed and the Welsh weather arrives sideways, so wind and rain shape the day as much as the gradient does.
The 300 km route is a durability event by any measure. It needs an aerobic base that lets you hold a steady tempo through the sixth, eighth and tenth hour, plus a fuelling routine you have rehearsed on rides of similar length. The 207 and 161 km routes reward the same things on a shorter clock: a controlled start out of Margam Park, patient climbing on the Bwlch, and eating before you feel the need. The cost of going too hard on the first climb is paid late and in full.
The day by rider level
| Route | Typical finish | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| 300 km | — | Durability deep into the day, a rehearsed fuelling routine, a steep climb on the Devil's Staircase with the distance already done |
| 207 km | — | Long steady climbing at tempo, riding in wind and rain, pacing the Bwlch early |
| 161 km | — | A long day with the signature climbs and a controlled start |
| 99 km | — | A hard morning with the Bwlch ridden with discipline |
