What this event asks of you
Unbound is the Flint Hills of Kansas: open, rolling gravel with sharp flint rock, no shade, and weather that decides the day. Heat and wind are normal. Rain turns sections into unrideable mud and the race into a carrying event. The 320 km route is the headline, a dawn mass start with checkpoints where your crew can resupply you and nowhere else. Checkpoint cut-offs are enforced on average speed, so a slow first half ends your day. The 560 km route starts the afternoon before, rides through the night, and allows no crew support at all.
The demand is endurance at a depth most road events never reach, sat on top of equipment judgement and self-sufficiency. The rolling terrain never gives a long recovery, so power stays on for hours. Fuelling is the limiter for most riders by the halfway point: the gut has to accept food and fluid in heat, which is a trained capacity. Mechanical skills are fitness here, because a slow puncture repair costs more than a bad hour of pacing. Train very long rides, train eating in heat, and practise riding loaded with everything you need between checkpoints.
The day by rider level
| Route | Typical finish | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| 560 km | — | Riding through the night with no crew support, sleep and fuelling decisions, complete self-sufficiency |
| 320 km | 11 to 17 h | Durability in heat and wind, fuelling the gut has been trained for, checkpoint cut-offs made with margin, puncture repair under pressure |
| 160 km | — | A long gravel day on rolling terrain with the heat building |
| 80 km | — | Steady power on rolling gravel and tyre choice for flint |
| 40 km | — | A first gravel event with handling as the focus |
