What this event asks of you
Gravel Worlds is Nebraska gravel out of Lincoln: no mountains, and no flat either. The roads roll continuously, short climbs that never need a small gear on their own but never stop coming, over gravel that ranges from fast to loose. Late August brings heat and humidity, and the wind on open farmland can turn a tailwind section into the easiest hour of your year and the return into the hardest. The 241 km route is the main event. The 483 km route is a different undertaking, long enough to ride through the night.
The demand is relentless rather than dramatic. Rollers reward a rider who can hold steady power over the top of each rise instead of surging and coasting, because the surges add up over hundreds of them. Heat and humidity make fuelling and hydration the limiter well before fitness does, and both are trainable. Group riding matters on the flat and windy sections. Train long rides with a steady power ceiling, practise eating and drinking in warm conditions, and build the habit of riding smoothly over rolling terrain rather than attacking every rise.
