What this event asks of you
The Haute Route is a stage race for amateurs, seven consecutive days in the Alps with a general classification and usually an individual time trial among the stages. The route and direction change each year, so the specific passes are confirmed by the organiser, but the shape does not change: long mountain stages on consecutive days, with timed climbs and neutralised descents. The single hardest demand is not any one climb. It is getting up on the fifth morning and climbing again.
Multi-day racing turns recovery into a performance skill. Fuelling during the stage, eating and sleeping between stages, and pacing the first day as if the last one matters are what separate riders who finish strong from those who fade. The physiology is deep aerobic endurance and the ability to repeat sustained climbing efforts with incomplete recovery across a week. Train with back-to-back long days in the mountains, practise your recovery routine as deliberately as your intervals, and know your sustainable climbing pace well enough to ride it when the group goes faster.
