What this event asks of you
Roubaix has almost no climbing, and it is one of the hardest days you can ride. The cobbled sectors are the event. The 170 km route starts in Busigny and follows the professional race across the famous sectors, including the Trouée d'Arenberg and the Carrefour de l'Arbre, before finishing on the Roubaix velodrome. The shorter routes start and finish at the velodrome and take in fewer sectors. Each sector is a maximal effort: speed is your friend on the stones, so you ride them hard, then recover on tarmac, then do it again. Exposed farm roads add wind to the equation.
The demand is repeatability and body durability rather than climbing. Hands, shoulders and lower back fatigue long before the legs, and a rider who starts bracing on the bars loses the ability to float over the stones. The fitness that matters here is the ability to produce repeated hard efforts of a few minutes with incomplete recovery, late in a long day, and the handling to hold a line and keep pedalling when the bike is bouncing. Tyre choice, pressure and a settled upper body are part of the training, not just the equipment. Punctures and mechanicals are normal, so fuel and pace with time losses in mind.
The day by rider level
| Route | Typical finish | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| 170 km | — | Repeated maximal sector efforts late in the day, upper-body durability, handling on the stones, time for mechanicals |
| 145 km | — | The decisive sectors from the velodrome loop, ridden at speed with recovery between them |
| 70 km | — | A first taste of the pavé with handling and tyre choice as the focus |
